Meet Kim Carlson, The EarthSmart Consumer

"EarthSmart shopping choices combine elements of beauty, value and health for our families and the planet."

Kim Carlson is becoming a popular name in consumer media and the business world by turning environmental ideals into action. Kim regularly promotes practical, how-to tips as the EarthSmart Consumer over the NBC affiliate in Minneapolis and St. Paul. She lectures often on sustainable living to schools, community and business groups, and has created cutting-edge environmental practices in the housing industry as CEO of Cities Management, Inc. and SenEarthCo.com.

Kim's Bio-Drama

Kim Carlson is the founder and Chair of Cities Management, Inc, the largest residential property manager in the state. Over the past twenty years, she has built annual revenues to $8 million, and oversees a portfolio of nearly 15,000 residential units in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Recently, Kim launched her newest company, SenEarthCo, a paperless software solution for property managers. She combines her successful experiences in property management with a commitment to socially responsible business through writing, community involvement and public speaking.

In 1994, Kim launched The Green Earth Initiative (GEI) an innovative environmental program for property management, leading the industry toward greater ecological awareness, health and conservation. In April of 1995, Cities Management (CMI) received the prestigious Environmental Initiative Award. The award supports the state's most innovative, environmentally progressive, and ecologically minded businesses and individuals. CMI has also received the Business for Social Responsibility Earth Day Award for 1996 and the Minnesota Multi Housing MADACS Award that recognizes the Green Earth Initiative in the Innovative Maintenance Program category. In 1996, Carlson and business Partner Tim Broms developed the first "green" building in Minnesota. The partnership created a model of sustainable building design for the CMI corporate headquarters using state-of-the-art environmentally friendly building supplies, deconstruction, natural fibers, air purification systems and recycled materials. Kim has co-authored the first in a series of practical guides on eco friendly property management, called "The Green Earth Guide to Alternative Cleaning Products, Paints and Chemicals" and "Office 2000 Next Generation Building Management," plus many articles for industry trade journals.

In 1998, Carlson was appointed to a Minnesota Pollution Control Agency work group to discuss pollution prevention as it relates to brown field development sites. In 2000, Carlson became a Fellow at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute in the Public Policy Forum Program, studying public policy, commerce and sustainable development. In 2000-2001, Carlson was the 34th Chair of the Minnesota Multi Housing Association (MMHA).
