Eco-Friendly Halloween

As everyone knows, the fall season is packed with activities. The kids head back to school, sports start up... more and there's the onslaught of holidays. Kicking off the holiday season is Halloween, generally a parent's least favorite cause for celebration. And while moms know that the sugar rush alone is reason to be more aware this year, they don't know that there are environmental implications to their celebration. Pioneer of the green movement and eco-chic expert, Kim Carlson provides the following tips:

•   Treat 'em Right - Children need to be taught, not only the implications that food has on their bodies but also the implications that their actions have on the environment. This Halloween try giving healthy treats like organic juice boxes, granola bar or organic fruit leather to trick or treaters

•   Project Runway - This Halloween, try making your childs costume instead of buying a one-time use. Try creating a nature inspired costume like a caterpillar from a matching green sweatpants and a hoodie with pipe cleaner antennae.

•   Party All Night Long - While planning your Halloween Party, make it eco-chic! Online Invites are a quick and easy way to get the word out (as well as economic in these times of unstability). You can also host family parties and replace trick-or treating. Have food and activities at every house on your block, or get together with friends and host a larger party at just one home.

•   Pick'A'Punkin - To create an exciting seasonal outing, take your children to a pumpkin patch. They can learn where pumpkins come from and pick their own, rather than buying from a grocery store. This helps to create a festive mood and bonding activity for the family.

So this Fall, help your family enjoy a green holiday by implementing Kim Carlson's simple tips. As the "EarthSmart Expert" on NBC, the host of the national radio program, Livin' The Green Life and the regular guest writer for The Minneapolis Star Tribune Newspaper's Saturday Home Section, Kim educates the public on the pleasures of a planet-friendly lifestyle, discussing topics ranging from stylish organic entertaining to nontoxic gardening and eco-golf.
