The Label That Defines Green
EarthSmart Consumer Certified is the brainchild of award-winning environmentalist and businessperson Kim Carlson.
It is a third party retail and/or brand program that provides consumers and retailers with a high level of assurance that products qualifying for the EarthSmart Consumer Certified Seal are authentically Green. Embedded in the program is a system for ranking products in levels of greenness. The EarthSmart certification system was developed collaboratively by a team of academics, researchers, retail experts and environmentalists with a background in responsible materials sourcing.

The 7 Key Elements of the program
The program certifies products that a retailer or brand chooses to be in the program. The certification is based on the following 7 rigorous environmental and social standards verified by 3rd party auditors.
1. Green Supply Chain
2. Factory Environmental Management Systems
3. Ethical Raw Materials Sourcing
4. Fair Treatment of Workers
5. Efficient Resource use
6. Compliance auditing at factory
7. Transparency
Green Product Levels
The level of "greenness" of each product is determined by ranking the metrics in the audit. The percentage of compliance achieved will determine the level of green attributed to each product assuming that the minimum standards are met. The higher the level of product compliance, the higher the level of green shown on the label using a light green to dark green color-coding scheme. Example factory metrics include:
• Proof of existing environmental certification for a raw material e.g. certified wood by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
• There are ongoing environmental management system training programs.
• Energy consumption is monitored and records of consumption are maintained to find opportunities for carbon footprint improvement.
• An active program for reducing raw material consumption is in place.
• Records are kept on waste recycled internally and waste sold for recycling externally and new opportunities to recycle more are routinely pursued.
• Human rights issues are addressed quickly and routinely.
• Anti-corruption policies are written and regularly communicated.
